Step 1: Prepare the Engine

Ensure the engine is off, cooled down, and in a safe, stable condition.

Remove any covers that block access to the fuel injection pump timing marks and the camshaft pulley.

Clean the area around the timing marks to ensure visibility.
Step 2: Identify Timing Marks

Locate the timing marks on the engine crankshaft pulley and the injection pump gear or housing.

Locate the Top Dead Center (TDC) mark on the crankshaft pulley.

Identify the advance or retard marks if present.
Step 3: Rotate Engine to TDC (Compression Stroke)

Rotate the engine manually (using the crankshaft pulley bolt) to bring cylinder 1 piston to Top Dead Center (TDC) on the compression stroke.

Verify by checking the valve position (both intake and exhaust valves closed for cylinder 1).

Use a dial gauge or feeler gauge if needed for precise TDC verification.
Step 4: Set Injection Pump to Timing Marks

Loosen the bolts holding the fuel injection pump to the engine block enough to allow slight rotation.

Align the injection pump timing mark with the crankshaft timing mark as specified in the manual (usually just before TDC — e.g., 15° BTDC, but depends on engine).

Adjust the pump rotation until the timing marks line up precisely.
Step 5: Fine-Tune Timing Using Dial Gauge (If Applicable)

Insert a dial gauge into the cylinder to measure piston position if required.

Slowly rotate the engine and monitor when fuel injection begins by observing pump plunger movement or nozzle opening (may require specialized gauges or pressure sensors).

Adjust the pump timing to achieve the recommended injection start angle.
Step 6: Tighten and Recheck

Once aligned, securely tighten the injection pump mounting bolts.

Double-check that timing marks remain aligned after tightening.

Rotate the engine a few times manually and re-check timing marks alignment to confirm no movement.
Step 7: Test Run & Fine Adjustment

Start the engine and let it warm up.

Check for smooth running and proper engine operation.

Use a timing light or stroboscope (if applicable) to check ignition timing at running RPM.

Adjust if necessary.

Always use clean fuel and maintain good injector condition for accurate timing.

Setting timing too advanced or retarded can cause rough running, overheating, or power loss.

For mechanical pumps, timing is critical because fuel injection is directly tied to pump plunger position.

Some pumps have an advance mechanism linked to engine speed — ensure it is functioning properly.
