  FREE SURFACE EFFECT Definition of free surface effect?     When a tank or compartment partially filled with liquid, when a ship is inclined. liquid will moves along with ship's inclined  direction. which will reduce the stability of the ship. How to reduce free surface effect : Swash bulkheads  Pocketing Surface permeability Sluice valves  Swash bulkheads This types of bulkheads give some additional strength, Which are longitudinal  bulkheads which will restrict the flow of liquid when ship is  inclined   Pocketing  fill the tank fully which will reduce the free surface effect Surface permeability The object such as machineries, engine and piping systems prevent the moving water  shifting of wedge, these reducing the free surface effect.
